About the role

Ready to take your Accredited Clinical Coding career in a new direction? Join CHKS as a Clinical Coding Trainee Trainer and develop the skills, confidence and experience to help shape the next generation of clinical coders.

This is a career-building opportunity for an experienced coder who enjoys sharing knowledge, supporting colleagues and making high-quality clinical data happen. You will be supported through the Clinical Coding Trainer Programme while continuing to apply your coding expertise across varied NHS and independent healthcare assignments.

This role is designed as a development pathway for experienced Accredited Clinical Coders who want to move into training, education and wider clinical coding leadership. You will be supported to build your trainer portfolio, strengthen your coaching skills and gain experience that can open future opportunities in clinical coding training, audit, quality improvement, team leadership or service development.

You will be part of an experienced, collaborative clinical coding team, contribute to AI-supported coding innovation and play a visible role in improving coding quality, learner confidence and healthcare information.

Role Responsibilities

  • Complete the Clinical Coding Trainer Programme with structured support, supervision and feedback.
  • Assist the CHKS Trainer with the preparation and delivery of training materials for coding workshops, induction sessions and post audit training feedback.
  • Provide supervised coaching, mentoring and educational support to trainees and less experienced coders.
  • Develop your understanding of adult learning principles, training design and effective feedback.
  • Build a portfolio of training activity, learner feedback and reflective development.
  • Continue to support CHKS’ clinical coding service by accurately coding patient records for NHS and independent healthcare clients.
  • Work across a blended role that includes:
    • trainer development and training delivery;
    • remote coding from home, with a laptop supplied;
    • onsite coding at a local private hospital when required, with travel expenses paid;
    • contribution to AI-supported clinical coding activity.
  • Raise coding queries or source documentation issues with the client lead or nominated contact in a clear, professional and constructive way.
  • Work collaboratively with CHKS Clinical Coding Team Leaders and colleagues to resolve coding queries and share learning.
  • Support a variety of coding assignments, giving you exposure to a broad range of clients, specialties and working environments.
  • Help maintain complete, timely, accurate and consistent clinical coding, contributing to high-quality information for patient care, reporting and service improvement.
  • Apply national clinical coding standards, conventions and procedures as defined by the Coding Classifications Service.
  • Represent CHKS positively by providing a professional, responsive and client-focused coding service.
  • Keep your skills current through regular remote coding workshops and occasional team learning activity.

Essential Criteria

  • Accredited Clinical Coding Qualification.
  • At least three years’ post-accreditation experience as a clinical coder.
  • An up-to-date clinical coding refresher course certificate.
  • Broad clinical coding experience across a range of specialties.
  • Strong technical coding knowledge and a commitment to quality, accuracy and continuous improvement.
  • Understanding of Data Security and Protection Toolkit requirements and patient confidentiality.
  • An interest in adult learning, coaching, mentoring or supporting others to develop.
  • Confidence working independently from home, while also being an active and supportive member of a wider team.
  • Clear and confident communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, clients and staff at different levels.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft 365.
  • Experience using ICD and OPCS within Classification Browsers.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience supporting, mentoring or training colleagues.
  • Interest in developing your career in clinical coding training or management within CHKS.
  • Curiosity about how technology and AI-supported coding can help improve clinical coding services.
